FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS
Do you have to walk up the 99 Steps to get to the hotel?
No.  Our hotel is accessible by car or taxi, with only two steps up to enter the property.  Six of our rooms are on ground level, with no further steps required.
Do you have A/C in the rooms?
All the rooms have A/C, or you can open the windows and balcony doors and enjoy our cool tropical breezes.
Do I need to bring my hairdryer?
No, our rooms all have hair dryers.
Do you allow pets?
No, I am sorry, but we do not allow pets.
Do you have non-smoking rooms?
All of our rooms are non-smoking.  Smoking is permitted in the commons area and on the balconies.

Yes, we have an on-premise Laundromat with state-of-the-art "Maytag" washers and dryers.
Do you have a swimming pool?
No, I am sorry, we do not have a pool.  But many of our guests like to eat at Indigo, a poolside restaurant overlooking Magens Bay, and enjoy swimming with their delicious meal.
What if there is a power outage?
We have a 65K generator to take care of our energy needs.
Are you close to local attractions?
The island is 17 miles long and 3 miles wide.  We are centrally located, so you can be anywhere on the island in just minutes by car.
Should I rent a car?
If you don't mind driving on the left, we recommend renting a car.  Taxi fares can add up in a hurry. We have standard issue American cars with the driving wheel on the left, but we drive on the left side of the road.  We have plenty of lighted parking for your rent car adjacent to the hotel.
How much is the taxi ride to your hotel from the airport?
The taxi fare is $8.00 per person, plus a charge for bags. The USVI government has set tthe rates that the driver can charge you.  Pick up a copy of the St. Thomas / St. John Magazine at the airport.  All the rates are posted in the transportation section.  There are no meters in the taxis, so you should always ask about the fare before entering a taxi.
IsIs Can you recommend a restaurant?
St. Thomas is known for its wonderful restaurants.  There are very few fast-food places here.  We will be happy to recommend our favorites that are both reasonable and delicious.
How late are the stores open?
Most stores downtown close at 5:00 p.m. after the cruise ships depart, but the restaurants stay open late.
What time is it in St. Thomas?
We are in the Atlantic Standard time zone, and we never change our clocks.   During the winter, we are 1 hour ahead of New York, but during the summer we are on the same time.
How close are you to shopping and the waterfront?
We are located at the top of Blackbeard's Hill, just a 5 minute walk to "world class shopping" and restaurants via the famous 99 Steps. (There are really 103 steps!)
Do your rooms have irons and ironing boards?
Yes.

Magen's Beach, which National Geographic named as one of the top ten beaches in the world, is just 10 minutes away by car.

All of our rooms have private bathrooms with showers and separate "make-up" areas for the ladies.

Our rooms have a western exposure facing the Governor's Mansion, with beautiful sunsets, overlooking Crown Bay - where the SeaPlanes land in the harbor.
How safe is it at the Green Iguana?
We have a secured entrance, a security system, and lighted parking in a safe neighborhood.
How safe is the island?
Unfortunately, crime is everywhere.  Be "street smart," as you would in any large city, and walk where there are other people around.

How close are you to the airport?
We are twenty-three traffic lights away, or ten minutes - depending on traffic.

Our daily temperature ranges from 85 F in the daytime to 75 F in the evenings.  We have constant Tradewind breezes, low humidity and stunning blue skies.  There is always a 30% chance of showers, usually lasting from only a few minutes to 30-45 minutes.  All day rain is unusual.  Don't bring a raincoat - the sunshine will dry you off.
Do you allow children?
Yes, children are allowed at The Green Iguana Hotel, but we are not really equipped to entertain small children, i.e. playground, activities, pool etc.
How close are you to the Ferry Dock in Charlotte Amalie?
We are just a ten minute walk from the ferry, or five minutes by car.
How far is Red Hook?
Red Hook is eight miles, about a 15 minute drive, along the scenic Skyline Drive.
Does St. Thomas have its own currency?
No.  We use United States currency, and major credit cards are accepted virtually everywhere.
Is there anything else I should know about the local customs that will make my trip more enjoyable?
Local custom dictates that you greet a person with the time of day.  You should start with "Good morning," "Good evening," or "Good night" before you say anything else. This is a very important and respected matter of ettiquette here. In general, you will enjoy the islands and your stay much more if you practice this simple and friendly courtesy. Otherwise, you will be viewed as a rude and impatient tourist and service will most likely be much slower.
